Diocletian's Palace with a historian

Toni Šare, who holds a master's degree in history, leads groups of up to 15 through Diocletian's Palace with headsets and 3D reconstructions of how it looked. It costs twice the cheapest palace walk, and the depth is the reason to pay it.

Small-Group Walking Tour with a Historian

About this experience

History Tours Split is run by Toni Šare, a magister of history (reviewers call him Tony). The walk starts at the Brass Gate on the Riva, the palace's sea gate, and goes down into Diocletian's Cellars, up to the Peristyle, through the Vestibule and past the Triclinium, then on to the Cathedral of St Domnius, Jupiter's Temple and out through the Silver and Golden gates. It takes 110 minutes.

Groups top out at 15, everyone gets a headset, and the guide uses 3D reconstructions to show what the emperor's palace looked like around AD 300. The palace has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979 (UNESCO), the same year Poljud opened across town. The tour doesn't go into the paid sites: the cathedral and the other ticketed sites need their own tickets.

It has nothing to do with football. We list it because a day with Hajduk works best with the Roman city alongside, and for that this is the most thorough option. 128 reviews average 4.9.

Tips before you book

  • Do it on your first day. Everything you see in the Old Town afterwards will make more sense.
  • Buy the cathedral ticket after the tour if it hooks you. The walk passes it but doesn't go in.
  • Morning starts beat the heat and the cruise crowds on the Peristyle in summer.
  • Ask the guide about the Riva: Poljud is under 2 km north of it, roughly 25 minutes on foot.
