A football and history day in Split

Split packs 1,700 years into a small peninsula. Start at the stadium, climb the hill behind it and finish in the Roman palace: one day, mostly on foot.

The three sights sit in a neat triangle. Poljud is on the north shore, Marjan's forest fills the west end of the peninsula, and Diocletian's Palace faces the harbour in the south. None is more than 25 minutes' walk from the others.

Here is a plan that works, the tours that fit each slot, and the one-ticket option for people who'd rather not plan at all.

The quick answer

Take the Poljud stadium tour in the morning (30 to 45 minutes), look into the Franciscan monastery next door, then spend midday on Marjan, on foot or on the 4-hour handmade e-bike tour. Finish with a palace walk in the late afternoon, when the stone has cooled. Short on time? The 3.5-hour bike tour covers the Old Town, Marjan and a guided Poljud visit in one go.

Can you see Poljud, Marjan and Diocletian's Palace in one day?

Yes, comfortably. Allow about an hour at Poljud, three to four hours on Marjan and two in the palace, with walking in between.

What should you do first in the morning?

The Poljud stadium tour. Mornings are quiet at the stadium, and the 25-minute walk from the Riva is pleasant before the heat.

The club's guide takes you through the trophy room, the press room, the VIP lounge and down to the pitch side in 30 to 45 minutes. What you see, and who should skip it, is in the stadium tour guide. Afterwards, walk a few minutes to the Franciscan monastery of Poljud to see Girolamo da Santacroce's 1549 polyptych with the oldest known view of Split.

Start the day inside Poljud: the club's own tour, from $13, free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

How do you get from Poljud up to Marjan?

Walk west through Spinut to the foot of the hill, or start from Varoš and take the stairway to the Vidilica viewpoint.

Marjan has been a protected forest park since 1964. Its highest point is 178 m, and the 15th-century church of St Jerome sits on the south rim path, with hermit cells cut into the rock behind it (Marjan). The path along the top is shaded by pines, and the beaches of Bene and Kašjuni wait at the bottom for a swim.

Bring water, and stop for a drink at the café at Vidilica.

Should you do Marjan by e-bike or on foot?

On foot if you only want the viewpoint. By e-bike if you want the summit, St Jerome's and the far side of the hill in one go.

Which Diocletian's Palace tour fits the afternoon?

The small-group walk for most people; the historian's walk if you want depth; the 50-minute walk if your legs are done.

The palace joined the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1979, the year Poljud opened. The stadium is protected too, but only nationally.

Finish in the Roman city: the small-group walk from the Golden Gate, 1.5 hours.

Is there one tour that covers it all?

Yes: the Old Town bike tour with Poljud, 3.5 hours from $104. It covers the Old Town, Sustipan, Marjan and a guided tour inside the stadium.

It runs in that order and ends with Croatian craft beer at a local bar. It is the only GetYourGuide product besides the stadium tour that goes inside Poljud. Riders must be 12 or older, and 18 for the beer. Four reviews so far, all five stars, so the sample is small. Lynda, from the UK: "Ante was a brilliant guide, we loved this tour :)"

What can you add in the evening?

The 20th-century history walk: the wartime bombings, Tito's Yugoslavia, the 1990s and Hajduk as a city symbol, in the cool of the evening.

The walk costs from $26 and takes 1.5 hours through the Old Town, with old photos from the guide's own collection on a tablet. It fills the gap between the Roman palace and the 1979 stadium. It is brand new on GetYourGuide, with a single review so far: "I went on this tour and would go again deff."

For the stadium's own 20th century, from Tito's Games to the 1990 flag burning, read Poljud's capacity and history.

What if Hajduk plays at home that day?

Swap the order: stadium tour the day before, palace in the morning, Marjan at midday and the match in the evening.

Tour slots shrink around home games, and the pitch side may be closed. A match makes a better ending to the day anyway. How to get a ticket, which stand to pick and what the derby takes is in Hajduk tickets and match day. Fixtures are in the 2026-27 season post.

Plan the stadium tour for the day before kick-off, and keep free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
